Shipping Containers

Certainly the most important recent development in the sailing world is the use of shipping containers to support a sail or power boat. Shipping containers range in size from 20 footers through the rare 30 footer to 40 feet, and then the high cubes, which are a foot taller than a normal shipping container. Each size has its benefits. If you are going to be outfitting a shipping container, it is probably best to get a one way or one tripper, which is a brand new shipping container. These can be painted to your choice of colors, inside and out. Logos are often placed on the outside of the containers. Inside, they are rigged with bunks, air-conditioned and heated and dehumidified rooms, combustible lockers, work stations, electricity, lighting, flat screen televisions, sail racks, etc. The walls are framed out and then insulated and covered with walls of Komatex plastic sheets or your choice of wall coverings.
Harbor Supply has outfitted close to a hundred of these containers so far, for many of the largest sail boats afloat. The shipping containers are either based here in Newport, or forwarded on containers ships to ports around the world. Here are the pictures of some of the most recent containers we have constructed.
One of two L'Ondine containers
The L'Ondine containers are unique. The 100+ footer's containers
carry the ship's cradles. When in port, the cradles are bolted to the top of these containers. Here is a photo of the superstructure inside that supports the containers.

A container that has already been framed and insulated. Komatex walls are being installed over the Tyvek. This container has double doors on each end for easy loading and unloading. Man sized side doors are also available. The yellow locker is for combustibles, which is a common option, as are work and storage cabinets.
